Description
Building on the proven performance of the LCD 3.3, the LCD 4™ is a next-generation, compact and wearable chemical warfare agent (CWA) and toxic industrial chemical (TIC) detector based on advanced, non-radioactive Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) technology.
Designed as an advanced warning device, the LCD 4 detects, identifies, and alarms to gas and vapor threats at or below Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) levels. The system determines agent type, class, concentration, and exposure dosage, making it suitable for continuous monitoring, screening, and survey operations, including post-incident or post-decontamination assessment.
The LCD 4 offers exceptional flexibility in operational use. It can be handheld or worn using belt, harness, or shoulder-strap mounting options, allowing users to perform their primary mission without obstruction. Audible and visual alarms, combined with a clear, easy-to-read display, provide rapid situational awareness in demanding environments.
Engineered for simplicity and reliability, the LCD 4 requires no routine calibration and minimal maintenance. Its ergonomic design, intuitive operation, and extended battery life reduce logistical burden while maintaining high detection confidence in extreme operating conditions. The device can log up to 72 hours of mission data for post-event analysis and supports serial connectivity for data download and integration.
The LCD 4 meets applicable MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461 requirements and is designed to support modern operational needs through modular extensions and accessories. Optional enhancements enable wireless communications, remote deployment, and expanded detection capabilities, including trace explosives, narcotics, and deposited chemical residues.
As the evolutionary successor to the LCD 3.3—originally selected by the U.S. Department of Defense for the Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD) program—the LCD 4 is backed by comprehensive service, training, and lifecycle support from Smiths Detection, a global leader in regulated detection technologies for CBRNE threats.
